Lack Of Financing Kills Baltimore Casino Gambling Hopes For Now
There have been studies done that indicate that Baltimore is the best place for a new Maryland casino. Up until Thursday, it was going to be Baltimore City Entertainment that delivered that casino to the state.
Now, the opportunity will again be open for outside developers to make a bid. A state panel decided that there have been one too many promises broken by Baltimore City Entertainment, and they informed the group that their time had run out.
"We have a responsibility to ensure the process moves forward in a reasonable period of time," said Commission Chairman Donald C. Fry. he also noted that the panel had been as patient as they could be under the circumstances.
The group had proposed a 500 machine facility, and then upped their plans to a 3,750 machine casino. Those plans, however, would not come to fruition because the company failed to secure the funding for the casino project.
On Thursday, Baltimore City Entertainment asked the panel for one more chance. They claimed that an agreement was in place with an outside investor, but the panel was not biting. members of the panel were quick to point out that the agreement was not yet finalized.
The casino license will now be re-opened after the new year. The panel voted 6-0 in favor of that outcome, and the state will now hope that a developer comes in with a plan that will bring a casino to Baltimore. The casino will have to be built on city-owned land, but that should not deter any potential developers.
