Lake Tahoe To Get Upgraded Casino Resorts and Hotels
Lake Tahoe's South Shore is about to undergo a $400 million upgrade in an area long known for its aging casinos and family motels.
Plans call for the Lake Tahoe Development Co. to develop two hotel-condominium complexes and a 50,000-square-foot convention center. In addition it will build 57,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and a pedestrian-friendly green belt on an 11.6-acre site on the north side of U.S. 50, directly across from Harveys Lake Tahoe Casino & Resort. The project will be linked with Heavenly Village by either an underground tunnel or overpass.
The South Lake Tahoe City Council and the city's Redevelopment Agency unanimously approved the project Tuesday. It now goes for a vote before the governing board of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency on July 26. An advisory planning commission to the agency has already recommended approval of the project.
Expectations are that the board will approve the permit for the project because it approved a permit for a similar project several years ago.
The project site is on a motel-occupied area next to Highway 50 that hasn't seen much of an upgrade since the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics. It contrasts with the other side of the highway, home to high-end shops, two Marriott properties that opened in 2002 and the Heavenly Mountain Resort gondola.
The project "will enhance the overall experience for visitors, especially during peak times ... like (the) Fourth of July and New Year's Eve," said Lew Feldman, attorney for the developers.
