Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is used to getting what he wants. That is why the letter that Gilbert sent to Cleveland fans after learning LeBron James would be signing with Miami was taken as a rick owner whining over not getting what he wants.
Whatever the case may be with Gilbert and his Cavaliers, one thing is certain, the Cavs owner is doing just fine by the residents of Cleveland. The latest example of that is the land deal he reached at the end of this past week.
Gilbert owns Rock Gaming, which won the rights to bring casino gambling to Cleveland. In the past month, Rock Gaming has entered into an agreement with Harrah's Entertainment to operate the casino, and now they know where that casino will be built.
Rock Gaming is set to acquire sixteen acres of land on the Cuyahoga River behind Tower City. While the price has not yet been disclosed, the deal assures that Clevelanders will have their casino sooner rather than later.
The company has been pushing for a temporary casino until they can build the permanent structure. Once completed, the Cleveland casino will be one of four casinos in Ohio. The other casinos are being built in Toledo, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Gilbert also owns the rights to the casino in Cincinnati.
Ohio voters approved the casinos in last November's election. It was the first time after several failed attempts that the residents of Ohio went along with a casino plan. The state has been hard hit by the economic recession, and the unemployment rate may have had much to do with the casinos' approval.
