The largest casino employer in Amador County, California, is laying off over 100 workers. The economic conditions over the past year has led to the decision of the layoffs, which will take place in the next two days.
Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel has almost 1,900 employees. After the job losses, which are tallied at 115, the casino employee total will drop to 1,780. That figure still represents the highest number of employees at any casino in the county.
The economy has caused layoffs at casinos throughout the US over the past year. Even some of the biggest casino operators have had to trim their staff in order to meet economic limits. Although Jackson becomes the latest to lay off workers, it does not mean they have not attempted alternative methods.
"We've tried to get our numbers down through attrition, but with the bad job market, no one was leaving," said General manager Rick Hoffman, "We had to do the layoff to get where we need to be."
Casino floor workers have been pretty much spared in the latest round of layoffs. Most of the layoffs have occurred to employees of the back of the house. Middle management was targeted for many of the 115 job losses.
The casino is not the only business that Jackson Rancheria is involved with. Their casino business is down ten percent, but their recreational vehicle park, gas station, hotel, and other ventures are faring OK at this time.
The casino is hoping that the layoffs are only temporary, and they are not leaving these workers out in the cold. The employees will be receiving severance packages, and will be called as soon as the casino can re-hire them.
