Lawmakers Speak Out Against Casino Gambling
Opponents of the learn and earn slot casino ballot initiative gathered downtown at the Hyatt on Capital Square Friday morning. "We cannot afford to bring casino gambling to Ohio as taxpayers, as employers, as employees or as families," said Auditor Betty Montgomery. Several state lawmakers said they oppose the constitutional amendment that would allow gambling in Ohio because the real benefits are not in scholarships, but in the pocketbooks of casino backers.
"What other group of people has the right to virtually write their mailing addresses into the constitution from a special interest perspective, then guarantee that they can't be taxed in the future," said David Zanotti, president of American Policy Roundtable. The amendment proposes funding for college scholarships and grants through revenue gained from slot machines and gambling at casinos. About 30 percent of the revenue would go to scholarships, and 8 percent would go toward economic development and capital improvement funds.
