Legislator From Hill District Assails Casino Plan

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

The Hill District would be better off in the long run if a replacement for Mellon Arena is developed through an alternate plan and a slots casino is built elsewhere, state Rep. Jake Wheatley said yesterday.

Mr. Wheatley, D-Hill District, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette editorial board he hasn't been happy that the Penguins and their gambling partner, Isle of Capri, haven't been more willing to work with the community.

The Penguins and Isle of Capri want to build a slot machine casino in the neighborhood and have promised to use $290 million to build a new arena and commit more than $300 million to additional retail and housing development around the complex. But Mr. Wheatley said the Penguins and Isle of Capri haven't involved the neighborhood's gaming task force in their proposal.

He said they chose developer Nationwide Realty for community development work around a new arena and appointed members of their nonprofit development group, Pittsburgh First, without community input.
