Lottery Gambling Decreasing As Quickly As Casino Gaming
State lotteries are responsible for some of the most important jobs in the country. Many of these state lotteries fund the school systems in states around the US.
With the economy in the dumps, state lotteries have seen a drastic drop off in sales. That could eventually trickle down to mean that school programs will be cut because of a lack of funds.
Millions of dollars a year is poured into the education systems in states such as Florida from their lottery sales. The Sunshine State is about to add the multi-state Powerball lottery to their repertoire, but it may be coming at a bad time.
The Powerball lottery, which has had jackpots this year in the triple figure of millions of dollars, is down seventeen percent for the first half of the fiscal year of 2009. That is a severe drop off that comes directly from the troubled economy.
"People are just choosing to find more safe ways to spend the little bit of extra money they have. The idea of buying a lottery ticket and getting rich is just not one that is being counted on these days," said Kylie Reason.
The Powerball is not the only lottery being affected by the economy. Mega Millions is another multi-state lottery, and the sales from Mega Millions is down almost ten percent in the past year.
