Lottery Raffles Becoming Next Fad For Individual State Gambling
The lottery is pretty much a way for states to allow gambling legally, and to be able to keep the profits from the gambling. With the increased casino expansion around the country, the lottery needed something to keep gamblers coming back.
The latest fad in state run lotteries are raffles. Individual states sell only a set amount of tickets at a price that is usually $20 per ticket.
The raffle usually has a cut off date, or end whenever all the tickets are sold out, whichever comes first. They then hold a drawing and give away various prizes, with the top prizes being $1 million.
The latest state to start one of these raffles is Iowa. The Lottery Board has approved their new $1 million raffle. There will be 120,000 tickets available for the drawing.
The state has done their homework on how these types of raffles have fared in other states. The opinion is that they have done well, mainly because these raffles are only held every so often, and not continuously.
"We've discovered with other lotteries that this is something you do on a limited basis so it doesn't lose its uniqueness or its flair with the public," said Tina Potthoff, the Iowa Lottery Spokeswoman.
