Lottery Sales In New Hampshire Need A Boost With New Options
State lotteries used to be the only gambling arena in town. That is no longer the case thanks to many states expanding their laws to allow casino gambling.
In New Hampshire, officials from the state lottery are now claiming that they need alternative ways to keep people playing the lottery. They are facing competition from bordering states where casino gambling has become legal, and they need help.
The new Hampshire Lottery Commission has been told by the Governor, John Lynch, to try and explore ways to increase revenue for the state. Revenue numbers do not appear to be headed towards the state goals.
It had been projected that the numbers in revenue were supposed to be $85.8 million. That number has been lowered to $79.5 million. The cause for the lowering of the projection is mainly due to expanded gambling options in neighboring states. Sales have so far been below expectations for 2008.
"People who live in New Hampshire expect a certain quality of life, and discussions about expanding gambling raise concerns among some over how it might affect the state. The fact remains that people gamble. If we don't provide the products our customers are demanding, they will spend those dollars elsewhere," said Richard Campbell, the Commission Chairman.
