For casinos in most of the country, the road back from the economic recession has been a slow and grueling process. For Louisiana casinos, however, they already know how to deal with this type of adversity.

When Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast of the US, the casino industry in Louisiana had a major setback. Several casinos had to close in order to deal with the devastation that came from Katrina.

On Tuesday, state police reported the gambling revenue for the month of March for Louisiana casinos, and the figures show that the state is not fully back to normal. Casinos in Louisiana had a revenue decrease of 5.2% from the same period in 2009. the total revenue for this March was $206.5 million.

The state received bad news this past week when Pinnacle Entertainment decided not to move forward with a casino project in Lake Charles. The company did, however, offer hope that they would be focusing on improving their existing casinos in the state.

Louisiana is not the only state where casino gambling revenue is down. New Jersey and Nevada, considered to be the two biggest gaming states, both have had a tough time attracting customers in the wake of the recession. Atlantic City is also facing heavy competition now from states such as Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The forecast for the economy has been brighter in recent months, and that has some in the casino industry excited about the future. With many states expanding their gaming options, revenue figures will not likely reach pre-economic recession levels in states where casino gambling was already prevalent, such as Louisiana.
