Louisiana Casino Gambling Revenue Down In August After Strong July

Louisiana casinos bucked the trend across the US in July by having an increase in gambling revenue, but the excitement was short lived. Revenue figures for August were released on Tuesday and casinos had a drop of ten percent.

For August, revenue was $199.8 million, compared to $220.3 million in July. It is not out of the ordinary that August figures are lower than July, which happens to be a traditionally strong gambling month in Louisiana.

Competition is also becoming a major problem for Louisiana casinos. Casinos have begun to pop up with more frequency in neighboring states, and people are not traveling to Louisiana casinos like they used to in order to do their casino gambling.

"Louisiana casinos are having the same problem as Atlantic City and Las Vegas when it comes to dealing with competition," said CGW Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "They used to be the only game in town, but now there are other cities and states that are catching up in the casino gaming industry."

Atlantic City casino revenue is even worse than in Louisiana. In addition to falling revenue, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York are making it hard for Atlantic City to attract customers.

Las Vegas was hurt financially when Macau became a big casino gambling destination in the Far East. Macau is now attracting many of the high roller Asian players that used to travel across the world to get their action in Sin City.
