Louisiana Casino Revenue Continues To Slide From Last Year
At first glance, it appears that Louisiana casinos are on the upswing when it comes to revenue. They increased their figures from April to May, but still fell off from where they were last year.
Revenue figures were released by the state police Tuesday and state-licensed casinos won $224.6 million in May. That figure represented a 10.9% increase over April, when only $202.6 million was won. That was the good news for the state.
The bad news was that the $224.6 million was still a decrease over the same month in 2008. In May of 2008, the casinos took in $235.2 million. That is 4.5% more than this year. Even with the decrease, many were pleased with the May figures.
"With the economy still trying to recover, it is good to see the casinos are at least improving month to month,' said observer Brent Crandy, "hopefully, the figures will continue to rise until they return back to the level they were at before the recession."
Louisiana is actually one of the lucky states when it comes to casino gambling revenue. Other states, including New Jersey and Nevada, where casino gambling is most prevalent, have experienced awful drop offs in their figures.
In Atlantic City, New Jersey, revenue has dropped over twenty percent and has fallen for many months in a row. The same has happened in Las Vegas, Nevada, a place where casino gambling used to be considered to be immune from economic challenges in the US.
