In 2010, the state of Maine may become one of the next states to legalize casino gambling. A group seeking that result will deliver signatures on Tuesday in the hops of bringing the issue before Maine residents next year.
The group will deliver over 100,000 signatures with the hope that at least 55,000 of them will be certified by the secretary of the state. If the signatures are certified, then a referendum to bring casinos to Maine would be placed on the ballot in late 2010.
The casino issue in Maine has been one that has become more prevalent in the past year, due in large part to expansion in other Northeastern states. Lawmakers have had discussions on the casino issue, but no resolution has come from those discussions.
Black Bear Entertainment is one group that is looking to bring a casino to the state, in Oxford. The additional revenue and job creation would help the state deal with financial shortcomings at a time when the recession has put restrictions on state spending.
Other states on the East Coast are also dealing with the idea of casino expansion. In Maryland, the state is preparing for its largest casino in Anne Arundel. Other projects are also in the works that would bring new casinos to the state in the next couple of years.
Recently, Pennsylvania and New York have expanded their gambling options. Pennsylvania lawmakers are in the process of legalizing table games. That expansion would help the state's casinos compete for gambling supremacy with casinos in Connecticut and New Jersey.
