As is the case with any decisions that involve legalizing gambling, there have been mixed emotions for the city of Manchester since being awarded Britain's approval for a Las Vegas style casino.

The Manchester City Council is now preparing to carry on with a legal battle if the government tries to stop the casino project.

Communities Secretary Hazel Blears has been asked by Gordon brown to put a hold on the casino plans, and to try and find other ways to regenerate the city on Manchester.

Council Chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein is not happy with the governments ideas to possibly stop the casino project, saying, ".....we would be obliged to consider all the options available to do us in order to protect 3,500 jobs and more than $250 million of private investment for Manchester, and East Manchester residents in particular."

The government would like to find alternatives that do not include gambling for the area, but they have already given the rights to the casino to the city. The legal battle that could follow could be a long process, but Lib Dem Councillor Simon Ashley feels it will be worth the effort.

"The stakes are high, but so are the rewards-$265 million of private investment and 3,000 new jobs are worth fighting for."
