Maryland Pull Tab Gambling Declines, Charities Suffer

In Washington County, Maryland, revenue for pull tab gambling has been on the decline for the past year, and it has caused local charities to receive less money then they have in the past.

Th Washington County Gaming Commission has announced that revenue from the sale of tip jars has declined. A portion of the taxes that are collected from these legal gambling games goes to different charitable organizations.

"As with many other areas of life in the current economy, gambling has been down," said observer Nigel Henry, "and when legal gambling revenue is down, that means less money that can be distributed to groups that are reliant on the money."

Last year, $2.6 million was given to charities. That was money that came from the pull tab games. This year, that number shrunk around fifteen percent, leaving many charity organizations searching for ways to make the money up.

The pull tab gambling is not the only form of gambling in the country that is suffering from the economy. Casinos around the US have also had sharp declines in revenue over the past year.

In Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the casino revenue decline is causing owners to downsize their operations. Employees have lost their jobs from many casinos around the country, and that has contributed to the downward spiraling economy.
