Massachusetts Casino Gambling Push Being Led By Mohegan Sun

Governor Duval Patrick ran his campaign to become governor of Massachusetts largely on a platform that involved expanded casino gambling. The people of the state voted Patrick into office, but he has yet to convince his fellow lawmakers that casinos would be good for the state.

The majority of his efforts occurred last year, and the economy had not hit the low point that it has seen this year. Now, there is a renewed push for casino gambling in Massachusetts, and it is being led by operators of the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

The Mohegan Sun is planning on opening an office in downtown Palmer on Main Street. The purpose of the office will be community relations. They will be trying to begin building public support for a casino in Western Mass.

"We believe that if gaming is introduced to the commonwealth we would be able to go into the market as the best known gaming company on the East Coast," said Jeff Hartmann, Chief Executive of Mohegan Sun, "We'll be there to introduce ourselves to the community."

People in Massachusetts might be receptive to casino gambling and the opportunities that it presents. Job loss has been a major problem in the state because of the recession, and casinos could provide much needed employment.

One thing that has turned in favor of gambling advocates is the removal of former House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, who was strongly opposed to casino expansion. The new Speaker of the House, Robert DeLeo, is in favor of casino gambling.
