Massachusetts Chooses New Gambling Oversight Head

With every good casino market around the US, there is a person that is in charge of making sure that the rules and regulations are followed. That person was appointed in Massachusetts on Tuesday by Attorney General Martha Coakley.

The AG chose Patrick Hanley, a former senior counsel in the Enterprise and Major Crimes Division at Coakley's office. The move is a key component as the state prepares for their entry into one of the most competitive industries in the Northeast.

"Patrick has extensive experience investigating and prosecuting intricate criminal enterprises, and has displayed the leadership qualities needed to oversee this division," said Coakley. "Our new Gaming Enforcement Division will serve to maintain public safety, prevent fraud, and ensure integrity in the gaming industry, and Patrick will lead those efforts well."

on the East Coast, casino gambling has become a way of life in many states. Delaware, New York, Maine, and Maryland have all opened new casinos in recent years. Pennsylvania is the state that has made the biggest strides in the industry, surpassing New Jersey as the second-largest gaming market in the US behind only Nevada.

Pennsylvania has added table games in the summer of 2011, and other states have played catch-up since. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick has been pushing for casino resorts since he took office, but it took until late last year before a deal was worked out with legislators. Patrick, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, and Senate President Therese Murray were all instrumental in negotiating the deal to finally end the casino saga.

In recent months, Massachusetts has been putting the pieces in place to run a regulated system of gaming. Authorized under the new law are three casino resorts, and one slot casino. The application process has begun, and the state will soon be issuing licenses based on the bidding that is currently taking place.
