Massachusetts Could Get Indian Casino, But No Profits
Governor Deval Patrick had what he felt was a full proof plan to bring three licensed casinos to Massachusetts. His fellow politicians did not agree, and shot down the proposal.
They may have wanted to put some more thought into that decision. there is a good chance that casino gambling will be coming to the state, only now, the Indian tribe trying to build the casino will not have to share the profits.
Indian tribes have the upper hand in the United States when it comes to casino gambling. They build their casinos on sovereign land, giving individual states no right to regulate, nor receive any profits from, the casinos.
The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is continuing their efforts to get the Federal government to grant them the right to build a casino in Massachusetts. If they are successful, which is highly likely, gambling would come to the state with no revenue sharing.
Patrick saw this possibility, and also the future. Thirty eight states currently have some form of casino gambling. It is coming whether politicians fight it or not. So Patrick did what he felt was best for the state he governs.
The rest of his colleagues that rejected his proposal may now have to sit and watch the Mashpee tribe takes in profits that could have gone to the state.
