Massachusetts Takes Precautions With Problem Gambling Summit

Most states begin their journey into gambling expansion with a blind eye turned away from the dangers that could come with the gambling. Massachusetts, however, took a proactive approach to dealing with the potential for problem gambling.

While lawmakers have aligned to push for casino resort gambling in the state, Suffolk Downs became an important place on Monday. A summit was held with leaders in the gaming and problem gambling fields to discuss how to expand gambling and stay cognizant of potential dangers.

"If we are to minimize the harm of any expanded gambling, we must invest in a comprehensive gambling policy at the outset," said Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling Executive Director Kathleen M. Scanlan, "and the Massachusetts Partnership for Responsible Gambling is a critical step in that direction."

The summit was attended by officials from Mohegan Sun, the state Racing Commission, the Missouri Gaming Commission, Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation, Suffolk Downs, the Responsible Gambling Council of Ontario, Wonderland Greyhound Park, and the MCCG.

Among the issues that were discussed were problem gambling treatment, prevention of gambling addiction, and other topics that related to problem gambling. The expansion possibilities in the state made it necessary for these groups to come together.

In recent days, House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray have both stated their support for casino resorts in the state. Governor Duval Patrick has been pushing for the casino resort gambling since he was voted into office, but his first proposal was rejected.
