May Brings Increased Casino Revenue To Mississippi
Mississippi has joined a growing list of states that has seen their revenue figures jump from the month of April to the month of May. The Mississippi State Tax Commission has released May figures, and the news is positive for the first time in a while.
In May, Mississippi casinos won $224.3 million, according to the figures that have been released. That represents a $19.2 million increase over the month of April.
"With the casino industry struggling like it is throughout the country, it is nice to see some positive movement in Mississippi," said observer Jack Demps, "hopefully, that trend can continue through the summer months."
Although the figures represented good news from the previous month, they were still below the numbers from the same period last year. In May 2008, Mississippi casinos brought in $235.7 million. That was $11.4 million more than May of this year.
The hope of carrying the growing revenue figures through the summer may be a long shot. People spend money on vacations, and generally work less in the summer, so the casino gambling usually slows at this time of year.
Casinos around the country are still waiting for the nation to recover from the recession. The economic problems have caused much harm to gambling destinations such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
