Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has announced that after twenty years of service, he will not seek re-election. Daley has been a pioneer in Chicago politics, but he claims the time is right for him to move away from the spotlight.
Mayor Daley's wife has been battling cancer, and Daley claims that his family is ready to move on the next chapter in their lives. Reflecting somewhat on his tenure as mayor, Daley would only say that "it just feels right." The next election for mayor comes in 2011.
One of the issues that Daley has been faced with in recent years is whether to expand casino gambling into Chicago. The city would benefit from the additional revenue the casinos would bring, and Daley had been open to the idea. Opponents are concerned about the social impact that casinos would bring to the area.
Daley did not come out and fully support the casino idea, but he did claim that he would look into any proposal. Support has been growing amongst lawmakers who want to bring gamblers back from neighboring states. Chicago residents frequently take their gambling dollars to Indiana.
One of the names that has already surfaced as a possible replacement for Daley is White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Several Obama Administration members claim they would be shocked if Emanuel did not run for to become mayor of Chicago. One even labeled the mayor job a dream job for Emanuel.
If Emanuel does decide to run, he would likely face some stiff competition from other politicians who may have their eye on the job. Among the possible candidates are state Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. Emanuel, because of his country-wide notoriety, would be the front runner for the position.
