In the past, Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos have traditionally seen an increase in business over the Memorial Day weekend. This year, hundreds of casinos around the US are expecting increased customer participation, leading to what could be millions pumped into the US economy.
Casinos throughout the country pay revenue taxes to their individual states, and in recent years, casino gambling has become a large source of revenue for states struggling with the economic recession. Memorial Day provides people an extra day on their weekend, and many will be spending that day at the slot machines and in poker rooms.
"I love when I have a three day weekend because I do not like going to the casino on Friday or Saturday night because it is too crowded," said Beverly Greller, "So on a three day weekend, I always go to the casino on Sunday night, having Monday off."
That will be the plan for millions of Americans, some casino executives believe that Memorial Day weekend will bring upwards of a twenty-five percent increase over normal weekend revenues. The extra revenue will mean more taxes for the states.
There are some casinos that will be experiencing the Memorial Day blitz from gamblers for the first time. Missouri, Pennsylvania, California, and New York are just some of the states that have expanded their casino options in the past year. Pennsylvania lawmakers actually approved table games for their casinos, but they will not be operational until the summer.
Barbeque's were always one way of celebrating Memorial Day weekend, but with the weather not always cooperating for outdoor activities, casinos have become an alternative that many people around the nation have taken a liking to.
"I used to have barbecues, but now my children are older and I prefer to go to the casino, eat their buffet dinner, and spend some of my weekend playing slots," said Mark Brimmer, who will be playing slots at Lumiere Place in St. Louis this weekend."
