MGM CityCenter Aria Casino Will Protect Dealers From Smoke
MGM Mirgae has promised that their CityCenter project will become one of the most luxurious destinations in the gambling world. The project comes equipped with some of the most technologically advanced features of any casino in the world.
One of those advancements will be the smoke curtain at Aria. The curtain will be placed between dealers and gamblers, so that the dealers will not be exposed to as much second-hand smoke.
A gambler will blow the smoke out of their mouths and instead of scattering around the room and heading towards the dealers, the smoke will shoot straight up in the air when it hits the curtain. This is a major advancement in the ongoing attempt to make casinos safer for employees.
"The air curtain is there to protect the dealer from the smoke," said Senior Vice President of Energy and Environmental Services for MGM, Cindy Ortega, "Now, it's not 100percent as a non-smoker, but I think we've taken such giant leaps. I think it's really great."
The curtain is also receiving high marks from workers unions. Local 721 head Joe Carbon has not yet seen the new cutains, but says that if they work like they are described, it will be a victory for dealers.
Several casinos are in the middle of legal battles with former employees who claim that second-hand smoke has caused them poor health. The most famous of the ongoing cases involves a former Caesras dealer who has sued the casino and Harrah's Entertainment.
