Michigan Groups Going For The Gold With Gambling Expansion Efforts

It is true that the state of Michigan is facing increased competition from neighboring states when it comes to casino gambling. That is why an organization in the state is seeking major expansion that would include seven new casinos.
Michigan Is Yours received approval on their petitions on Friday from the Board of State Canvassers. That approval now will allow the group to start collecting signatures to back the gambling expansion proposal.
In order to get on to the ballot, the organization will have to collect 380,000 certified signatures. While the seven casino proposal seems large, even at a time of historic gambling expansion in the US, it is not the biggest proposal in Michigan.
Another group, Racing to Save Michigan, is proposing eight new casinos for the state. The majority of these casinos, however, would be at state horse racing tracks. It is similar to what lawmakers in states such as Kentucky have suggested.
The existing casinos in Michigan are opposed to any expansion for fear of increased competition. Lawmakers are open to the idea because it would mean millions of dollars in tax revenue and thousands of employment opportunities.
The unemployment rate in Michigan has been well chronicled. The auto industry in the US took a severe hit during the economic recession, and Detroit is the center of that industry. Many Michigan residents lost their jobs, and the casino expansion may be a way for some of those jobs to be recouped.
