Casino gambling is becoming one of the biggest industry's in the US, and with the increased gambling comes increased addiction. The Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse is hoping to shed light on the situation starting today.

The conference begins in Kansas City this morning, with experts from all over the world weighing in on ways to prevent and treat gambling addiction. Usually, the gambling problems run hand in hand with alcohol and drug addictions.

The Midwest Conference is an annual event and it has become increasingly necessary with the large amount of gambling expansion taking place in the US. States that have never had casinos are experiencing casino gambling for the first time, and many of these states have no knowledge of how to handle potential gambling problems.

"What the Midwest Convention has done in the past is educate the public and counselors on the dangers of problem gambling," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "This year, however, many of the people attending will have first-hand knowledge of what problem gambling has done to their communities."

The conference is open to the public, and Dr. H. Wesley Clark, the Director of the Center for Substance Abuse will kick off the seminar with the keynote address shortly after 10AM this morning. Other experts in the field are scheduled to speak throughout the three day event.

Missouri is one of the states that has recently expanded their gaming options. With the economic recession costing many people in the US their jobs, gambling has become a popular way to try and stave off economic problems, and that has led to an increase in problem gambling.

In most states, hotlines are set up and treatment centers with qualified counselors are available for those who feel themselves or a family member has reached a point where help is needed.
