Problem gambling is on the rise. It is not because people are necessarily gambling more, it is just that there are more gambling options presented in states all across the US. That is why the need for problem gambling awareness has grown so high.

This week, in St. Louis, Missouri, the annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance abuse will be held. The conference will feature experts in all gambling-related fields, and will serve as an important tool for many Midwest states.

"Almost every state in the US has expanded their gambling options in some way over the past couple of years," said observer Mandy Walkins, "With that type of expansion comes potential problems, and states need to be prepared on how to treat these problems.

Problem gambling has become a hot topic for lawmakers all across the US. While expanding their gambling options, some states have not put in place the proper treatment programs, and it is a cause for concern for many counsellors.

The Midwest conference will have problem gambling program coordinators, addiction specialists, and others who are trained in problem gambling treatment. The bottom line is that these type of conferences are necessary, and the state need to have representatives attend.

At the Midwest conference, program directors from Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, and Missouri will all be present to share their ideas. The goal is for every state represented to learn what other states are doing to prevent and subsequently, treat, gambling addiction.
