Mississippi casino revenue had rebounded in October after experiencing many tough months in a row. Officials in the state thought that it may have been a sign that the casinos had turned the corner.
On Monday, reality set in once again. November revenue figures were released by the Mississippi State Tax Commission, and revenue decreased in November. In fact, it was the worst month since September of 2005.
Back then, the revenue figures were explained because Hurricane Katrina had just come through the Gulf Coast and left casinos out of business for extended periods of time. This November, revenue was $185.4 million.
"The trend continues that the number of people visiting casinos hasn't dropped, the money they're spending has," said Allen Godfrey, Deputy Director of the state Gaming Commission, as reported by The Associated Press, "They don't have the gambling budget they had two years ago."
In October it looked as though the casinos were on the road to recovery. Revenue in October was up[ $7.1 million from September, a sign that gamblers were finally spending more money gambling again. November, however, gave a harsh reality check to the state.
The trend around the country has been the same in November. The two biggest gambling destinations, Atlantic City and Las Vegas, both experienced what has become normal this year, a drop in revenue.
