Mississippi Casino Revenue Down Twenty Percent In June
So much for the gulf coast holding their own in the casino industry during the recession. Mississippi released revenue figures from June on Monday, and state casino revenue dropped by twenty percent in June.
The Mississippi State Tax Commission released revenue numbers that were far below they previous year. In June, $189.7 million was won by state casinos. That is down from the $237.3 million that was won in June of 2008.
The drop in revenue came as no surprise. Casino revenue around the US has been dropping for over a year now, and lately it has become a major problem for casino owners. Mississippi casinos also had a decline in May from the previous year.
"The economy is now at the point where almost every person is being affected," said observer Paul Handel, "for a while Mississippi casinos held on, but now they are in the same boat as other casinos in the US."
It did not matter where in Mississippi the casinos were located. On the Gulf Coast, revenue dropped from $116.4 million in 2008, to $84.1 million in 2009. Casinos on the Mississippi river dropped to $105.6 million, from $120.9 million in June of 2008.
