Missouri Casino Revenue Up In September From Same Month Last Year
Missouri casinos may have an advantage over other states this year when it comes to year over year casino revenue, but that does not change the facts. While other states are watching their casino industry slip, Missouri casino gambling is thriving.
In September, revenue at Missouri casinos was up 6.8% from the same period in 2008. The increase comes largely because of the lifting of loss-limits at state casinos. That happened last November.
Voters approved a measure that lifted the loss-limits, and, in the process, opened the door for revenue to increase for the first year that the new gambling limit laws are in effect. There is little doubt that the loss-limit law is the main reason that revenue is up at Missouri casinos.
"The fact that gamblers can now bet more when they go to a casino shows in the revenue figures for the past several months," said Casino Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "Next year will be more of an indication of how the casinos are actually doing comparable to the previous year."
Last year at this time, St. Louis casinos were dealing with flooding. There also has been a big new facility opened. Those two factors help contribute to a revenue increase in the city of 10.3%. Kansas City casino revenue was up 3.6%.
Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the two most popular casino destinations in the US, have both been dealing with declining revenue. The economic crisis has devastated the Las Vegas casino industry, and Atlantic City has been hurt by both the economy and increased competition from neighboring states.
