In most states that offer casino gambling, revenue has been in decline for the better part of the past year. The economy has drained people of extra spending money, and it is the casinos that are paying the price.

Missouri, however, received some good news on Wednesday. The Missouri Gaming Commission released revenue figures for the month of July, and they were up four percent over the same period last year.

"I think a large percentage of gamblers are senior citizens and they set their own limits and budget an entertainment amount to spend," said gene McNary, Gaming Commission Executive Director, "Gambling is their bright lights and toys, they consider it entertainment."

There are twelve casinos in Missouri, and most of them had increased attendance in July over July of 2008. The state has also been helped by some relatively new casinos that have brought fresh customers into the casinos.

Revenue figures around the country have not been as promising as Missouri. Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the two biggest gambling destinations in the US, both had revenue declines in July. Atlantic City is on a string of months in which revenue has declined in double digits.

Still, while many casinos struggle to revive their business, expansion is taking place. Individual states have expanded their casino gambling laws, and there are more casinos being built now than at any time in the nations history.
