Mountaineer Casino Reaches Over 200 Laid Off Employees This Year
Casinos in the US are not out of the woods yet when it comes to the economy and what it has done to their business. In West Virginia, there was evidence of that fact Friday when the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort laid off more employees.
This round of lay offs consisted of thirty-five employees at Mountaineer, most of whom worked in the administrative offices. It is another example of how the economy has devastated the casino industry around the US.
These lay offs are nothing new for Mountaineer. In January, the casino slashed their employee base bu firing 175 workers. Employees were fired from various departments back in January, and left the casino with just under 2,000 employees.
The latest wave of firings were mostly caused by a continued decline in revenue. For the second quarter, Mountaineer had a revenue decline of four percent. That is not as bad as many casinos in the US, but it still was enough to warrant the firings.
In the biggest casino areas of the country, Las Vegas and Atlantic City, revenue has been decreasing by double digit figures over the past year. The two gaming capitals of the US are struggling to keep their signature industries alive and kicking during the economic recession.
