National Problem Gambling Awareness Week On The Horizon
It is sort of like a drug that nobody knows about. The longer it is in society, the more experts come up with ways to keep it from becoming a problem. That is why the National Problem Gambling Week coming up in the first week of March is becoming so important.
Gambling in general is becoming much more prevalent than it ever has been. Many states in the US have expanded their gambling laws and the access to casinos is much higher than it has been in US history.
It is only natural that with gambling increasing, that problem gambling cases will be on the rise as well. That is what makes the NPGW all the more important. It is a time when knowledgeable people will be speaking around the country on all areas of problem gambling.
"In the past, not as much has been known about how problem gambling can affect a person. There has been many advances in the way problem gamblers can be treated and they will all be on display during this crucial week," said counselor Debra Kyteen.
Seminars will be held throughout the week in different states. In New York, the Genesee-Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse will be holding their first ever Gambling Awareness Program Luncheon on March 3rd.
Warning signs are often the key to detecting gambling problems early enough to treat them. If they go on to long, severe damage can be done to not only the individuals themselves, but also their families.
The good news on the problem gambling front is that with each state that expands their gambling laws, there usually comes a commitment to problem gambling treatment centers. In some states, developers of new casinos are required to contribute to problem gambling awareness.
"With all the literature available and counselors that have now been trained in this area, it is becoming much easier to spread the word of what gambling can do to a person. That is why National Problem Gambling Week is even more important now than ever before," said Kyteen.
National Problem Gambling Awareness Week is March 1-7. For more information on events that could be taking place during this week in your area go to www.npgaw.org.
