Navajo Nation Finally Enters World of Casino Gambling
According to Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley, their Indian Tribe has began talks with a top casino contracting firm specializing in the construction of Indian casinos. Up until now, the Navajo Nation Indian Tribe did not run any casino gambling businesses. Now, they are creating a new office within the Tribe called the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise, along with plans to amend current Navajo Nation laws to allow for casino gambling. The Navajo people voted back in 2004 to allow casino gambling sites to be owned and operated by the Tribe and these are the first steps in making it actually happen.
The Tribe is in talks with several companies including a top Hospitality firm while planning the new casino. One of the companies is Jenkins Entertainment, which has developed other Indian casinos in the past. According to Jenkins' Web site, the group has helped develop the River Rock Casino for the Dry Creek Band of Pomo Indians in California, the Apache Gold Resort Casino for the San Carlos Apache in Arizona. They also helped manage or build several other Indian tribe gambling casinos.
Indian Tribe casino gambling has surged over the past 10 years in the United States. Total revenues at the venues has surpassed Nevada's Las Vegas. Indian Gaming is a $22 billion dollar per year industry and is healthy and growing as evidenced by the Navajo's interest in becoming involved. Over the past year, Indian gaming has grown more than 15%, a figure 3 times higher than Las Vegas or Atlantic City.
