New Indian Casino Agreement Saves Environment In California
A new Indian casino is coming to the state of California, and that is good news for people who are aware of the environment. An agreement has been reached to place the casino in a more environment friendly location than where it could have been.
The North Folk Rancheria of Mono Indians will run the new casino that will be located in an unincorporated area of Madera County. The Indian tribe and the state avoided a casino being built on the tribe's Sierra foothills rancheria.
It was agreed that the tribe could build the casino, even though it is not on sovereign land. The risk to the Sierra National Forest and the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway were too great to allow a casino on the tribe's land.
"These compacts are a model for protecting the environment and balancing the needs of the tribes and local communities," said Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Governor of California. A survey was done with local residents before plans of the compact moved forward.
"The compacts avoid construction of a casino along California's coast and in the Sierra foothills while respecting both tribes' sovereign right to pursue economic development through gaming and other means," said Schwarzenegger.
The other tribe he is speaking of is the Wiyot Tribe of Humboldt Count. They gave up their plans for a new casino, but they will now receive some of the revenue generated from the new casino.
