The state of New Jersey relies heavily on the Atlantic City casino gambling industry to fill budget shortcomings. In the past couple of years, AC casinos have not been doing their job of pumping money into the state budget. Even worse, the racing industry has struggled as well.
This week, Governor Chris Christie drew a line in the sand and it is not something that those in north New Jersey will be happy with. Christie essentially turned his back on the racing industry, and will now focus on bringing the AC casino industry back from the dead.
The Governor's Advisory Commission on New Jersey Gaming, Sports and Entertainment Economic Recovery Plan provided the necessary results for the governor to crush the racing industry. Governor Christie went as far as to call the industry a "failure."
The divide between north and south Jersey has been ongoing for years, and this type of report will not help mend old wounds. The south is blaming the north, and vice-versa, for the economic troubles of the gaming and sports industries in New Jersey. Judging by Governor Christie's remarks, he is siding with the south side.
The Atlantic City gaming industry is under heavy fire from other Northeastern states. Pennsylvania and Delaware have made the biggest dent in the stronghold AC casinos had over the area when both states legalized table games. Delaware also has something that New Jersey does not, legalized sports betting.
Christie vowed to change the current downward spiral of the AC gaming industry, He spoke Wednesday of a Las Vegas of the East Coast. On the surface, it seems like a great idea, but it will take billions of dollars to bring AC back from the brink of financial disaster.
