Northwestern Indiana Riverboats Upgrade Casinos

Casino riverboat operators in northwestern Indiana are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on improvements as they enter their second decade of legalized gambling in Indiana. Rick Mazer, general manager at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, in the midst of a $485 million upgrade, said operators feel they will have support of the Indiana Legislature for years to come. "The stability of the legislative environment has allowed us to go forward with this expansion," Mazer told the Post-Tribune of Merrillville for a Monday story.

"Compared to other states, elected officials, from the state to city and county officials, have encouraged development here. "The project to expand the boat to 175,000 square feet will be completed in two years, and will include a new lounge and steak house on land attached to the boat, Mazer said. Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City has just completed a $170 million expansion. Its new boat has 65,000 square feet of space for gambling and an entertainment complex for shows and conventions nearly twice that size.
