It is an unfortunate situation that occurs when the economy tanks in a country. In the US, thousands of citizens have turned to gambling as a way to make a quick buck and help themselves through the difficult economic times.
On Thursday, President Obama signed the Unemployment Extension Bill that is expected to bring relief to tens of thousands of Americans. The legislation restores unemployment benefits to those who were cut off by the government back in June. It was another step, according to President Obama, in the road to recovery from the economic recession.
It is inevitable that some of the unemployment benefits will end up in the hands of gamblers who will try to parlay their good luck into future security. With more gaming options than ever in the US, problem gambling, especially in light of the rough economy, may soon be picking up.
"Most people are not going to take their unemployment checks and blow the entire check at their local casinos," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "There is, however, going to be a small increase in gambling by those who may want to just spend twenty or thirty dollars trying to hit on a slot machine."
Already dozens of states have turned up their attention to problem gambling. Awareness and treatment centers have been opened in some states, and others who already had the facilities have added counselors in preparation of an increase in gamblers who may need help.
The casino industry will take their revenue any way they can get it these days. Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the two major gaming destinations in the US over the past several decades, have both seen their revenue drop by millions of dollars a month. AC casinos have been hit the hardest, with increased competition from neighboring states also hurting business.
President Obama is hopeful that the benefits he extended on Thursday will be used to keep families afloat until employment opportunities open up. Casinos have actually been a large part of the employment plan in many states, with construction work and permanent jobs coming open with each new casino that is approved.
