Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo, all received the right to develop casinos last November when voters approved the new form of gambling. Each city, however, has had different views on how they will reach the end goal of having a casino in their area.
Cleveland officials are considering allowing the casino developer to open a temporary casino in the city until the permanent facility can be built. Cincinnati officials, however, have shot that idea down late this past week.
The goal in Cincinnati is to have the first casino opened in the state, according to what officials told Local 12 News. In order to reach that goal, the developer will have to break ground by the end of this year. According to projections, that would allow the casino to open by 2011.
Columbus will likely not be in the mix for the first opening. A group in the city opposed the Arena District location for the Columbus casino, and now an amendment is being placed on the ballot for May to move the casino location to the old Delphi auto parts store.
Voters in Ohio had turned away casino gambling several times in the past decade. The proposal that was approved in November, however, was organized well, and came at a time when thousands of people in the state were being laid off from their jobs.
The new casinos are expected to bring millions of dollars in tax revenue into Ohio, and the employment opportunities are going to be in the thousands. Temporary construction jobs and permanent casino employment will be available as Penn National Gaming begins to develop the casinos.
