Ohio Casino Gambling Plan Receives Endorsement From Police Union
It is not often that the police and casino gambling are on the same side. In Ohio, however, the police are showing their support for a plan that will add four new casinos in the state.
The Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, the largest police union in the state, revealed Tuesday that they will be supporting the casino plan. It is the biggest endorsement for the plan so far, and is sure to sway many voters.
"These are tough economic times for Ohio's cities and counties," said FOP Treasurer Mark Drum, in a statement released Tuesday, "We are seeing communities all over the state struggle with declining revenues that have forced them to face cuts in their public safety forces."
Those cuts are a major reason why the FOP is throwing their support behind a project that would bring casinos to Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo. The group responsible for securing signatures to have the plan put before voters succeeded, and voters will have their say once again on the casino gambling issue.
Ohio residents have never been in favor of casino gambling. The issue has come up on the ballot several times over the past couple of decades, and residents have overwhelmingly defeated each plan. This time around, however, may be different.
Recent polls suggest that casino gambling is gaining support in the state. There even have been polls done that show that Ohio residents are now in favor of casinos. With many of these residents losing their jobs because of the recession, the casinos would provide a boost in employment.
