Only Three Percent Of Singapore Youths Are Problem Gamblers
Problem gambling can start at a yopung age. That is what many counselors will tell people who are looking for statistics on problem gambling. In Singapore, only three percent of youths are affected by problem gambling.
That was revealed during the Singapore Problem Gambling Conference on Thursday. The study was commissioned by the Singapore Prison Service, and was conducted by Nanyang Technological Unviersity Professor Chang Weining. The results of the study were that three in every 100 youths are considered problem gamblers.
"It's the older people who seem to have less of a structured lifestyle because they are not under a school system and have less rigid schedules," said Professor Chang, when describing why problem gambling happens more in adults than children, "They also have more resources for gambling."
Singapore, while alarmed at the rate, still has a lower percentage of youths who are problem gamblers than other countries. In the US five percent of youths are considered to have gambling problems.
The Conference was held this past week to spread knowledge about problem gambling. Lawmakers use these studies to decide what kind of regulations are needed in the legalized gambling industry.
For others, the information can be used to help explain the dangers of gambling to children and adults alike. The statistics also reveal where the most heavily affected areas of a country are when it comes to problem gambling.
