When Ohio voters approved four casinos last November, there was still a large number of people who were against any form of gambling expansion in the state. Among those who were opposed to the casinos were Jerry Chabler and John Smith.
The two have both applied to be on the new Ohio Casino Control Commission. Governor Ted Strickland claims he will make his decision on the seven people that will serve on the Commission in September.
Currently, thirty-seven people have applied to be on the Commission. Strickland said that a variety of factors will go into making his selections. The Commission will not be selected along party lines, as set forth in the rules that Strickland must follow.
Certain restrictions were placed on the governor before making his choices. Of the seven person Commission, only four can be from the same political party. The four counties where the casinos are being built will be represented by at least one member who lives within the county.
To take care of the legal side of the issues that the Commission must work out, an accountant, a person with law enforcement experience, and an attorney must be chosen. It ends up being a lot of restrictions for Strickland to adhere to while chosen the final seven.
Last November, voters approved casinos for Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo, and Cincinnati. The Cleveland and Cincinnati casinos were awarded to Rock Gaming, which is owned by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. Rock Gaming has chosen Harrah's Entertainment to build and operate the casinos in those city's.
Toledo and Columbus casinos will be owned by Penn National Gaming. The casino gaming company owns several casinos in other states throughout the US.
