It was a dark day for many businesses in Russia last year when casinos were forced to close under new Russian gambling laws. The government's intent was to drive casino gambling out of the most populated parts of the country.
Initially, the casino that closed insisted that they would not relocate to the remote areas where casino gambling would still be permitted. On Saturday, however, the Oracle Casino became the first to open under the new laws when it opened its doors to customers in Above City.
It was not the type of opening that is customary when a new casino opens. Only about 500 people showed up, but most of them looked as though they were only checking out the facility. Less than twenty percent of those in attendance were gambling.
Despite the lack of people on the first day, the casino is encouraged by the location and feels that they can thrive in the market. The closest big city to the casino is Rostov-on-Don, located approximately sixty miles from Oracle.
"There's a lot of gambling people here," said Valery Saparin, Marketing Director for the developer of the casino, Royal Time, "We hope that a lot of people will be drawn to us in the near future."
The casino industry in Russia had been thriving until the point where the government decided that it wanted to rid the big cities of the casino gambling. In an effort to not completely block casinos, the government allowed for their opening in less populated areas of Russia.
