Oregon Hoping New Slot Machines Will Boost Gambling Revenue
When something is not working or revenue remains stagnant for a couple of months, it usually means it is time for a new promotion at a casino. For the state of Oregon, they are hoping new slot machines reignite interest in gambling.
The state has installed 400 new slot-type games in bars around the state. It is the beginning of a process that will lead to over 2,000 new machines going in bars and taverns throughout Oregon. The Oregon Lottery is hoping the new machines will turn around the downward revenue trend.
"We're real hopeful that we can bring some players back and encourage others to play more," said Lottery Director Dale Penn, as reported by the Associated Press. Of course, there is a sense of reality that comes with the current economic condition in the US.
"The gambling industry as a whole for years was thought to be recession proof, but this recession has changed that view,"s aid Oregon Lottery Spokeswoman Mary Loftin, "Across the country, lottery sales are down."
Lottery sales and casino gambling are both taking a major hit with the recession. Las Vegas and Atlantic City are two gambling destinations that have never in their existence seen the kind of revenue decline they are currently experiencing. In Atlantic City, revenue has fallen in double digits for many months in a row.
Oregon bars claim that the smoking ban that went into effect in January also had something to do with the decrease in gaming revenue. They claim that tribal casinos that do not have to abide by the gambling laws have taken some of their customers.
