Over 100,000 Show Up At Singapore Casino Resort In First Week

Anyone who had doubts as to whether a casino resort would work in Singapore need only look at the amount of gamblers that have showed up in the first week that a casino has been opened in the country. Resorts World Sentosa has accumulated over 100,000 customers already.

Last weekend was the most celebrated of all Chinese holidays, their New Year's party. It coincided with the opening of the first casino in Singapore, and the party that ensued brought in plenty of patrons.

According to reports coming out of the casino resort, 128,000 people have visited the facility. Those numbers were mostly from last weekend, and the numbers have fallen off through the week. Heading into the new weekend, officials from Resorts World anticipate that the numbers will again increase.

"The queues have kind of tapered off, for now," said Robin Groh, Assistant Director for Communications at Resorts World Sentosa, "These queue lines are still here. This being the first non-Chinese New Year weekend, we are expecting large queues to come in as well."

Singapore authorized two casino resorts several years ago, and it looked as though Las Vegas Sands would be the first company to open a casino in the country. The economy, however, caused a delay in the Marina Sands project.

That left the door open for Malaysian company Genting Group to finish their casino resort first. The Sands facility is expected to open in April, while Genting moves on with other business ventures. Genting is contemplating a move into the US casino market.
