Penn National Casino Proposal Comes Under Fire In Ohio

Penn National Gaming was supposed to the savior for one of the four zones approved for state-owned casinos in Kansas. They were that savior, until the company decided to renege on the deal they reached with Kansas officials, and pulled out of their agreement.

The company had to understand that their decision to walk away from a written deal would come back to haunt them at some point in the future. That time is now for the people of Ohio who are afraid that Penn National will do to them what they did to the state of Kansas.

"What Penn National did in Kansas is not going to help them gain the trust of Ohioans," said observer Milt Grady, "You just don't walk away from a deal and leave another state stranded without some kind of repercussions."

Penn National is the principle backer of the Issue 3 Casino Plan in Ohio, and opponents of the plan are calling for voters to look at the recent record of the company. The plan, if approved in Ohio, would make no requirements to the amount of time that could pass before Penn National began to build their casino.

In fact, the deal gets even worse for the state. Penn National is under no commitment to ever have to build the casino. If voters do approve the plan, they would have to trust Penn National at their word, a word that is on shaky ground after what the company did to Kansas.

"This is a dangerous situation for Ohio because Penn National has been known to abandon ship at the first sign of competition or crisis," said Grady, "voters had better be fully aware of what they might be signing up for."
