Penn National Gaming has now taken their second attempt at buying land for a potential casino in Columbus, Ohio. The latest purchase of the company came at the former site of the general Motors-Delphi Automotive plant.
Originally, Penn National had bought land in the Arena District, which is where the casino was slated to be built by voter approval last November. Business leaders, however, questioned the location and have pushed for the casino plans to be changed.
In order to change the location of the casino, an amendment would have to be voted on by residents in Ohio. That is expected to take place in May, and once the new location is approved, Penn National will attempt to sell the site they bought in the Arena District.
Hollywood Casino Columbus will be the name of the new facility that still has no home. The casino will take several years to build, and the target date for the opening is late 2012. The facility will be 180,000 square foot.
Ohio voters approved four casinos in the last election. It was a victory that was a long time coming for those who wanted casino gambling in the state. Previously, there had been several attempts to legalize casinos, but they were turned away by voters.
The plan that finally gained approval calls for a casino in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo. Penn National has been working with Columbus on the casino location, and has offered little resistance to relocating to the former auto plant site.
