Pennsylvania Casino Revenue Up Thirty Percent In April
The casino gambling industry in Pennsylvania just keeps giving the state confidence as the industry grows. The latest form of positivity came this week when it was announced that gaming revenue had jumped thirty percent in April.
The revenue figures from Pennsylvania casinos was somewhat skewed because new facilities had opened in the past year that drove the revenue figures up. Still, there was plenty of optimism regarding the future of the industry.
"Pennsylvania has had a tremendous start to 2010 when it comes to their casino gaming industry," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "Slot revenue was already creeping up in late 2009, and now with table games and new casinos, the state is prepared to take a serious run at becoming the new gaming capital of the Northeast."
For April, revenue at Pennsylvania casinos was $195 million. That represented a thirty percent increase, and $45 million more than the same period in 2009. Even without the figures from the two casinos opened in the past year, Rivers Casino and Sands Bethlehem, the already existing casinos had an increase of $2.5 million in year over year figures.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has been busy in recent months holding public hearings on table games at various casinos. Lawmakers in the state legalized table games earlier this year, and most casinos plan to have the games up and running by this summer.
Sands Bethlehem casino announced plans to layoff some employees recently, but they cited it as an ordinary business decision to re-examine their finances in the first year of operation. The casino is planning on hiring hundreds of employees when the table game gambling arrives.
