Pennsylvania Casino Revenue Up Thirty Percent In September

The state of Pennsylvania added a new casino, Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, in August, and the casino has helped increase revenue for the state. State casino revenue was up almost thirty percent in the month of September.

The state's nine casinos had revenue of $172.85 million for September. That figure was up 29.85% from the same month in the previous year. Even without the new casinos, however, Pennsylvania still would have seen a revenue increase of 4.2%.

This news comes at a time when other states are still feeling the effects of the recession. Many states that offer casino gambling have been experiencing revenue declines for the summer months and the beginning of the fall.

"The people of Pennsylvania have really shown over the past couple of months that they are fully prepared to support casino gambling moving forward," said Casino Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "the revenue increases should only get better with more facilities opening in the next couple of years."

Philadelphia will be getting the new SugarHouse Casino. Although protest groups have attempted to keep the owners of SugarHouse to begin building, trucks were brought in this past week and construction will be under way in the next week.

The revenue figures for Pennsylvania are particularly stunning when considering that Atlantic City casinos, which have dominated the Northeast for decades, continue to see their revenues decrease.
