Pennsylvania Casinos Continue To Grow At Expense Of Atlantic City
The troubles of Atlantic City casinos have been well documented over the past several years. Revenue4 figures at the city's casinos has continued to drop on a monthly basis.
The same cannot be said for Pennsylvania casinos. In March, the casinos had yet another month in which revenue increased over the same period from the previous year. It appears that Pennsylvania is now benefiting from the struggles in Atlantic City.
For March, revenue at Pennsylvania's seven casinos was $155 million. That figure is up nine percent from the same month in 2008. Atlantic City casino revenue was down nineteen percent in March.
The revenue figures are only expected to increase in Pennsylvania. There are new casinos being built in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia that will drive revenue even higher in the coming years.
The domination that Atlantic City held in the past over casino gambling on the East Coast is now non-existent. Other states have expanded their gambling laws and casinos are popping up in neighboring states to New Jersey.
Of the seven casinos that are currently operational in Pennsylvania, only one had a decrease in revenue for March. Harrah's Chester Downs outside of Philadelphia dropped to $29 million. That is a seven percent decrease from the previous year.
