Pennsylvania Debate Sparked by New W.V. Table Gambling Law
In Pennsylvania the money from the new slots parlors is starting to show itself in a state fund which could help cover the costs of state public schools. This is an important aspect in Pennsylvania right now because Governor Rendell is currently looking for an answer to solve the problem he is facing with covering public school costs.
The costs of public schools are being paid by local property taxes at the moment. The governor is proposing to take some weight off the local property tax by increasing the state sales tax from 6 to 7 percent. He fears doing this though, because he feels his political opponents will advertise the move as a tax rate hike.
Then there is the issue of West Virginia. This past week they passed a law allowing table gaming in state racetracks and casinos. The games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, are expected to draw tourists away from Pennsylvania. The new W.V. law is sparking minor debate in Pennsylvania about the possible addition of table games to their slots only parlors.
The idea is that the slots parlors that were instituted this year in Pennsylvania could be solving the public school cost problem, and if the slots solve that problem imagine what offering table games could do.
Governor Rendell did point out Tuesday that the West Virginia table gaming law should not fuel the Pennsylvania debate for table games. But that is a mighty request.
